In the early 1800's, colonists brought domestic animals such as sheep to graze in South Africa. Because the native wildlife competed with the sheep for forage, farmers shot them as pests. By the time that conservationists realized that the quagga (Equus Quagga Quagga) was critically endangered, it was too late. The last known quagga died in the London Zoo in 1883. Today, some are trying to bring quaggas back by backbreeding Plains Zebras.
